Formed in 2002 in Boulder, CO, by Scott Donnell (guitar) formerly of Denver hardcore outfit Scarred by Life, with Ben Roy, (vocals) former vocalist of East-Coast hardcore band Thousand Year Suffering, joining few months later, Enfilade went through several changes in personnel before Donnell and Roy joined with the remains of the band Overhand Right, Tim Erwin (bass) and Darryl Rivet (drums), to form the band’s current line-up.
As the members of Enfilade see it, the rock genre has fragmented into a non-cohesive folio of styles: While mainstream rock radio is dominated by listenable, yet simplistic, pop songs, ‘progressive rock’ has seemingly spiraled into a self-indulgence that only musicians appreciate. Add to this uneasy mix grittier influences like hip-hop meeting hardcore, and the contemporary musical soundscape becomes a series of poorly-executed fusions.
While combining aspects of early East-Coast hardcore and modern progressive rock, powerful dynamic guitar, intricate rhythms, and expressive hook-driven lyrics, Enfilade creates a sound that captures listeners and fans from the both the hardcore as well as the more commercial radio-friendly rock scenes without forcing an uneasy truce. Progressive rock, hardcore, pop-punk, and radio-rock are all represented within Enfilade’s sound, encompassing elements of rock’s past, a glimpse of rock's future and, ultimately, a break from forced compromises.
The band continues to tour throughout the West and Midwest. Their most recent CD is entitled, Epics for the Impatient.
