Hard Karma
In an era defined by the latest pop ‘flavor of the day,’ the sextet Hard Karma — Bill Bohlen (bass), John Bohlen (keyboards), Al Buffone (percussion, samba party whistle, raps), Joe Collins (vocals/raps, guitars), Derek Holscher (drums, vocals), Andrew Vail (vocals, guitar, hand percussion, bongos) — remind us where music came from, where it’s capable of going, and during just one show, just where the listener can get a whole helping of what online entertainment magazine Kaffeinebuzz.com touts as, ”A friggin' fiesta of funk, jazz, blues and rock-sonic arrangements ranging from Tower of Power to a Latin samba."
Hard Karma believe passionately that music still has something meaningful and powerful to say, so it’s no wonder that many fans and observers have noted this as one of those rare bands whose performances one remembers for days after, and the brotherly chemistry that makes the band work is a constant reminder of music's ability to not only get you off your ass, but to liberate your spirit as well. With band members continually writing new material, show-goers also discover that each live show is an event unto itself, presenting something new and unforgettable each time the band performs.
Besides regularly performing alongside many talented and diverse Denver bands, such as the award-winning Yo, Flaco, The Fabulous Boogienauts, Opie Gone Bad, and Judge Roughneck, Hard Karma have gained respect as headliners at various top-notch venues in the Denver Metropolitan Area, including the popular downtown hot spot, The Soiled Dove, and giant of the local music scene, Herman’s Hideaway.
Hard Karma officially released their self-titled debut CD in September 2002, featuring the tracks "Newbie" — a rappin' track with 70s soul guitars and gliding keyboards — and the languid, misty love song, "The Other Day."
